Quaint Mountain Villages & Monasteries
Time stands still... take a drive or book an excursion and enjoy this special part of the island where tradition is upheld and spend a day in history.
Anafontiria
In Anafonitria you will find the Monastery of Anafonitria built in a vast green pine forest worthy of pure admiration. Founded in 1429, the monastery is a place of history and memorial, as the patron saint of the island, Agios Dionysios, lived here as an abbot. Inside the church, an exceptional icon of the Virgin and Child, of Byzantine origin, is preserved today, thought to originate from Constantinople.
Continuing north, you will meet the mountain village of Kambi located on Mount Schiza, where a large cross has been erected in honour of those who lost their lives during World War II. In Kambi there are also many findings from the Mycenaean times, such as the Mycenaean tombs. Some of these tombs had been destroyed in the past by thieves, while others contained weapons and jars. In the village there are some cafes and restaurants with magnificent panoramic views to the sea and the surrouding green area.An ideal destination to enjoy the sunset.
Volimes
Volimes – the villages of Ano-Kato and Meso Volimes – is the largest mountainous village of Zakynthos, with deep, still alive tradition, natural beauty and history. In the area, there are important churches such as Saint Paraskevi which was built during the 17th century, 15th century Saint Theodosius and many smaller churches. Entering the village, you will come across small shops with traditional items handmade by the women of the village. A walk towards the Ano Volimes is worth your time as you will encounter lovely buildings with architectural interest and old stone mills.
From Agios Leon you may enjoy a quick drive to Louha and Giri, two charming mountain villages. From the few places in Zakynthos that are not only untouched by tourism but also by the huge earthquake in 1953. Beautiful villages that date back to the late 15th century, small and densely populated with stone houses, manicured courtyards, stone fences and paved uphill alleys, today have 45 residents. The traditional architecture has been preserved almost intact giving a sense of travel in time.
